Bitten or scratched by a dog or monkey?

Do this now, in this order. It takes minutes and it is what protects you.

  1. 1

    Wash the wound now

Soap and running water, for a full 15 minutes. This matters more than anything else you do — it physically removes virus from the wound.

Most people stop far too early. Run this.

    15:00

    Wash timer ready.

  2. 2

    Disinfect

Antiseptic, iodine or alcohol if you have any. Do not close or bandage tightly.

  3. 3

Call before you travel to a hospital

Ask whether they have both rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin in stock right now. Arriving somewhere that only holds vaccine costs you hours you may need.

  4. 4

    Do not wait for symptoms

By the time symptoms appear, treatment no longer works. Go today, even for a small scratch or a lick on broken skin.

Call first — and ask for both

There are two separate things you may need. Vaccine is widely stocked in Bali. Immunoglobulin is not held everywhere. That is why the instruction is to phone before you set off, not simply to find the nearest clinic.

Rabies vaccine

Given as a course of doses. Widely available at private hospitals and larger clinics.

Rabies immunoglobulin (RIG)

Given once, around the wound, for higher-risk exposures. Scarcer, considerably more expensive, and not stocked at every hospital — this is the one to phone ahead about.

Say this on the phone

  • “I have a possible rabies exposure — a bite/scratch today.”
  • “Do you have rabies vaccine in stock right now?”
  • “Do you also have rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) in stock right now?”
  • “Can you treat me tonight, and what payment do you need up front?”

What it costs, honestly

A full private course of vaccine, and immunoglobulin if it is needed, can run from the high hundreds into the low thousands of US dollars. It varies by hospital and by whether RIG is used. Private hospitals normally want payment or a guarantee of payment up front.

Save the dates your clinic gave you

The clinic that treats you writes your own post-exposure plan. Type those dates in here so they are on your phone, then add them to your phone calendar too.

Schedules vary. Follow the written PEP plan from the clinic that treated you. Bali Ready does not decide your vaccine schedule and does not send notifications.
