What has happened?

Anything with a head impact, a deep wound or a suspected fracture goes to a 24-hour emergency department, not a clinic. Serious trauma ends up at Ngoerah either way.

How healthcare works here

  • Two systems, and you will use the private one

    Bali runs a public system anchored by Ngoerah (Sanglah) and a private system — BIMC, Siloam, Kasih Ibu, Bali International Hospital — that almost every tourist uses.

  • Private: faster, English-speaking, expensive

    Short waits and staff who will speak English, but payment or a guarantee of payment is expected up front and costs are high by local standards. Have your insurer's number ready.

  • Public: far cheaper, longer waits

    Ngoerah is the island's referral and trauma centre and handles the most serious cases. Waits are long and English is variable. A public ambulance to a serious accident will usually take you here.
