Money & ATM

Five things that decide how much your money is actually worth here.

  • Withdraw in IDR, not your home currency

When an ATM offers to convert at a “guaranteed rate”, that is dynamic currency conversion. The machine sets its own rate and it is usually worse than your own bank’s. Decline it and choose IDR every time.

The markup is built into the rate, so it never shows up as a separate fee on the screen.

  • Use bank ATMs

BCA, Mandiri, BNI and CIMB are the safe defaults. Prefer a machine attached to a branch or inside a mall over a standalone street unit.

    • BCA
    • Mandiri
    • BNI
    • CIMB
  • Withdrawal fees add up

Indonesian ATMs typically charge a fee for each withdrawal, so a few large withdrawals beat many small ones. Your own bank may add its own charge on top.

Typical ATM fee IDR 25,000–IDR 50,000 per withdrawal

  • Count the cash before you leave the counter

At a money changer, count it yourself, in front of them, and do not hand it back once you have counted it.

  • Grab and Gojek are effectively cash

Foreign cards frequently fail in-app, so most tourists pay drivers in cash. Carry small notes — a driver will not want to break a 100k for a 22k fare.

Try it before it costs you

Two decisions you will actually face, in about a minute each.

The test that works anywhere

Learn this before any list, because it outlives any list. A licensed changer displays the Bank Indonesia “PVA Berizin” licence board. No board, walk away.

  • PVA Berizin board on display — the Bank Indonesia licence
  • Rates posted on a board, not quoted verbally
  • No commission — a “no commission” sign plus a rate far above everyone else is the trick
  • A printed receipt
  • You count the cash yourself at the counter, and do not hand it back

Do not change money at the airport

Airport rates are materially worse than in town. Change a small amount for the taxi and a drink, then do the rest properly at a licensed office the next day.

Old US dollar notes get refused

Banks and changers here often refuse US notes older than about twenty years, or take them at a worse rate. Bring clean, recent, unmarked notes.

Which ATMs to use

BCA · Mandiri · BNI · CIMB Niaga

  • These four reliably take foreign cards

BCA, Mandiri, BNI and CIMB Niaga. Standalone street machines from unknown operators are the ones to skip.

  • Use a machine attached to a branch, in banking hours

Or one inside a mall. If a machine swallows your card, an open branch can usually deal with it on the spot; away from a staffed branch retrieval is much harder, so call your bank or card app straight away and freeze or block the card.

  • Fewer, larger withdrawals

Indonesian ATMs charge a fee per withdrawal and cap the amount per transaction, and your own bank may add its own charge. Several small withdrawals cost you several times over.
