Beach safety
Rip currents, not sharks, are the real danger on the west coast.
Where rips are strongest
The west-coast surf beaches, on any tide.
- Kuta
- Legian
- Seminyak
- Canggu
- Echo Beach
Swim between the red-and-yellow flags
That is the patrolled zone. Lifeguards watch it; they do not watch the rest of the beach.
Caught in a rip? Do not swim against it
A rip pulls you out, not under. Swim parallel to the beach until you are free of it, then come in at an angle. Raise an arm if you need help.
Red flags mean the water is closed
No exceptions, however calm it looks from the sand.
Reef and urchin injuries need proper cleaning
Coral cuts infect quickly in the tropics. Clean them properly and see a clinic if they redden.
Where to go
Swim on a lifeguarded beach between the red-and-yellow flags. Balawista lifeguards cover the Badung coast and are the number for a rip-current incident.
