Areas & getting around

Bali's distances look short on the map — journeys rarely feel that way.

Short distances, slow journeys

Single-lane roads, scooters, ceremonies and school or rush hours mean a 15 km trip can take an hour or more. Always leave a generous buffer for flights and bookings, and check a map app on the day rather than trusting distance alone.

  • Kuta / Legian

Busy, budget-friendly and close to the airport — good for first nights or short layovers. Vibe: lively, touristy; caveat: traffic and street noise can be heavy.

  • Seminyak

Beach clubs, dining and shopping for a smarter budget. Vibe: polished and social; caveat: parking and beach-road traffic get congested at sunset.

  • Canggu / Berawa / Pererenan

Popular with surfers, remote workers and longer stays. Vibe: cafés, co-working, rice-field views; caveat: roads are narrow and often jammed, especially around peak hours.

  • Ubud

Inland, cultural, surrounded by rice terraces and forest. Vibe: calmer, wellness-focused; caveat: it's a real drive from the coast, so plan beach days accordingly.

  • Sanur

Quieter, family-friendly, calmer water than the west coast. Vibe: relaxed, older-established; caveat: nightlife is limited compared to Kuta or Seminyak.

  • Nusa Dua / Jimbaran

Resort-heavy, gated and orderly, seafood dinners on the beach at Jimbaran. Vibe: family and resort holidays; caveat: independent exploring outside the resort areas takes more effort.

  • Uluwatu

Clifftop views, surf breaks and beach clubs on the Bukit peninsula. Vibe: dramatic scenery, laid-back; caveat: roads to and from the Bukit can be steep, narrow and slow.

  • Amed / Lovina

Quiet north and east coast towns, diving, snorkelling, black-sand beaches. Vibe: remote and low-key; caveat: getting there from the south takes a real chunk of a day — check a map app before booking.
